Amber Varnish

Amber varnish has traditionally been made from amber and amber residues so low in quality that they cannot be used for jewelry and little else.
But some people use higher quality amber products to make their varnishes.
Varnish is made with a with a high concentration of resin, formulated with Baltic Amber, linseed oil thickened in the sun and polymerized linseed oil.
The easiest product to use is a high grade amber powder. It cannot be powder that is residue from processing jewelry because that residue amber powder will contain polishing compounds and other impurities. It must be ground directly from amber chips. It is available in 500 gram packages for trial use and in bulk on request.

Improved Baltic Amber is another product that is available to make amber varnish. Raw amber is processed in an autoclave to remove impurities. Raw amber stones can also be used. Any grade can be used from low-quality amber, called “Schlauben” or “Sklejka” to high grade clear.
