Amber as it comes out of the mines or sea is not suitable for jewelry making. But stones are sought after by collectors and people needing samples for demonstration and testing to determine if their amber is genuine.

By nature raw amber is full of impurities, bubbles and cracks. For centuries amber workers have used many different methods to clarify amber and make it useful for the jewelry trade. Today, virtually all amber used in jewelry has been clarified in a autoclave.

Amber is expensive. And modern technology makes creating imitation amber that is very hard to detect as an imitation. That includes imitation raw amber stones.

So how do you buy them. We recommend that you visit one of the amber fairs in Gdansk, Poland (Spring and Summer) and buy what you see in bags displayed, of for the larger stones, those highlighted in the display cases.

Expensive to travel? Let us put it this way, Chinese companies have for years traveled to Poland to buy and make contacts with reliable sellers. To them, and it should be to you, a wise investment in their business.

If you want small stones for testing or a collection, you can safely get them here. But for larger quantities, visit an amber fair.
